The idea of the Arc de Triomphe initially germinated in 1805 in the mind of Napoleon I, who wanted to celebrate the successes of his armies. But if the first stone of the building was laid in 1806, it took until 1836 to attend its inauguration.

Indeed, the death of the two architects in charge of the design of the project slowed down the project for a time. Abandoned during the Restoration, it came back to life under the orders of Louis XVIII and then Louis-Philippe.

The symbolic significance of this massive monument grew even more when the remains of the Unknown Soldier were buried there in 1921. The tribute to this anonymous hero is a way for France to celebrate all the soldiers who died for their country in over the centuries.

In fact, since 1923, an eternal flame, revived every day, has been burning there in memory of soldiers who died in combat. Gradually, the monument became an embodiment of patriotism, in times of war as well as peace.

Deeply inscribed in the urban landscape, the Arc de Triomphe is best appreciated from the outside. And the good news is that there is no need to pay a single dollar for it! The immense Place de l'Etoile, like the wide surrounding avenues, offer perfect vantage points to admire the monumental arch.

But you will have to get a little closer to admire and decipher the statues and bas-reliefs that adorn its facades. These are a concentrate of the military history of France and celebrate multiple battles and combatants.

Under the Arc, finally, you will discover a more modest but highly symbolic engraving: the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Next to this moving place is the famous Eternal Flame, nestled in a bronze shield.

This returns, on the one hand, to the turbulent history of the monument, and on the other hand, to the evolution of its symbolism. Because what was initially the symbol of warlike triumph has gradually become a broader tribute to the homeland.

In addition, the place offers temporary exhibitions. Thus, you will be able to discover until January 2022 an exhibition entirely devoted to the Unknown Soldier.
