Why is it better to invest in a bag than in real estate?

If owning your own home remains a (very) profitable way to bail out your bank account, luxury leather goods are beginning to overshadow real estate. Because in addition to being sustainable (and delighting us), buying a luxury bag before reselling it years later can thus guarantee you a nice little added value. Aspen, bank overdraft.

It's the stock market that says it: investing in a luxury bag would be (much) more profitable than buying real estate, even in Paris. Yes really. For a few years now, luxury bags have never been so desirable. Logical, since they are cheaper to buy than to resell. Vintage or new, colorful or classic, precious or casual… If you've unearthed a designer bag in your grandmother's attic or in an old flea market, know that now it may be worth gold. The more original it is, the more you can profit from it (and your wallet will thank you). The first of the class to acquire urgently? The iconic 2.55 from the house of Chanel and the Birkin branded Hermès. According to a study carried out by the site specializing in the sale of luxury bags, Bag Hunter, in 2016, the price of these wonders would have increased considerably (up to 70%) since their creation.

Supporting evidence...

As for the label with the intertwined double C, the price of its famous quilted bag has skyrocketed since its birth in the fifties. Initially sold for €206, it is now in the sights of all stylish girls (ready to break their PEL to afford it) ready to shell out… €4,600. “This increase in the value of the Chanel bag reflects that of the global luxury market. Even though luxury goods remain excessively expensive, bags are finding more and more potential buyers in the first place. Our definition of luxury is changing, and so is the way we consume it,” says Evelyn Fox, director of Bag Hunter.

Same pattern at Hermès. Extremely rare, the Birkin invites itself into the dressing room of the biggest stars for a staggering sum. In question: its price has soared in less than five years with a good 14.2% each year. We let you do the math. Result: it-girls around the world are snapping it up at all costs. Could the 2.55-Birkin combo be unbeatable? Not sure. The Chanel Boy bag, a worthy heir to the iconic 2.55, also lends itself to financial speculation. Timeless, it has been hanging from the arms of the most stylish girls on the planet for a few seasons already. We can say thank you to Karl Lagerfeld who imagined it from scratch in 2012 to the delight of seasoned fashionistas. A host of colours, a winning leather and chain combo, rock to perfection and tailored for every occasion, the Boy is one of the most popular models from the Parisian house. You will have understood it: with 14% inflation per year on average, against 10% in real estate, the match between leather and stone seems to have (finally) a lucky winner.
