Over 120 clothing brands will be able to open on Sunday

More than 120 clothing stores will be able to open on Sunday, after the signing of a branch agreement on the derogation of Sunday rest in accordance with the Macron law of August 6, 2015, we learned from concordant sources on Friday.

This agreement signed between the Federation of clothing signs, the CFDT and the CFTC, which concerns more than 120 clothing brands, 120.000 employees and 22.000 points of sale, will be applicable as of August 1, told AFP Claude Boulle, of the Commerce Alliance, confirming information from the daily Les Echos.

It provides for the doubling of the remuneration of the hours worked on Sunday, a compensatory rest paid for overtime, and relies on the principle of reversible volunteering and the possibility of giving it punctually in the event of unavailability.

A ceiling has been set at 26 Sundays worked per year unless the employee wishes to do more. The brands also undertake to cover childcare costs up to 40 euros per Sunday worked.

"This agreement is excellent news for our brands that have been going through difficult times for several years. The clothing stores, like department stores, will finally be able to benefit from Sunday customers ", welcomed Christian Pimont, president of the Alliance du Commerce.

These store openings on Sunday should have "a favorable impact on employment", estimates the trade alliance which expects the creation of 250 new jobs and the maintenance of 850 positions thanks to the turnover generated by the Sunday work.

An analysis rejected by the FO Commerce Federation, opposed to Sunday work, which considers on the contrary that these Sunday openings "promote partial and precarious" employees "employment barely paid the minimum wage, which often have no choice, especiallyWhen they want to be hired ".

This agreement, adds his representative Christophe Le Comte, questioned by AFP, is also risking "to promote the multiplication of facilities offered to major brands whose competition destroys local trade and kills the city centers".

"It is a liberal measure which has no socially utility.People have only one salary and they will not spend more than they can.The stores will only sell the rest of the time, "said Jenny Urbina of the CGT Commerce, strictly opposed to Sunday work.

"Sunday work risks becoming once worked again like the others", without an increase in overtime or only with a simulacrum of increase."And, frankly, who will keep a child for 40 euros per day, 4 or 5 euros per hour?", She asked.

According to the Alliance du Commerce, there are now four branch agreements in France relating to Sunday work in trade (DIY, Parisian sewing, jewelry-jeaillerie, branching clothing signs).
