Design and ergonomics

After so many years of absence on the smartphones market, one could only expect a return in force on the part of Xiaomi. This is why we welcomed the Xiaomi Pad 5 with pleasure and its luxurious look ... which is reminiscent of a flagship product of a certain brand with the apple. The tablet has a plastic back as well as a gray or white metal frame, which gives the whole a sober and premium look thanks to its excellent finish quality.

This undoubtedly places the tablet to the rank of direct competitor to the most upscale brands, such as Apple and its iPad Pro or iPad Air.It is a bias of the Chinese brand that reveals its desire to attract the faithful users of iOS tablets, leaving the originality on the sidelines, both in terms of colors and in terms of design.

Regarding the arrangement of pimples and ports on the slices, we find practically trait for line the arrangement of Apple iPad.If we take it in portrait mode, we find at the top the unlock button, two speakers and a microphone. On the bottom, there are two other speakers, a microphone and the USB-C port. Finally on the right, we still have two other microphones that perfect the collection. No 3.5 mm jack on the horizon, which means that an adapter, USB-C or Bluetooth compatible earphones are essential.

Test Xiaomi Pad 5 : un iPad en moins cher ?

We also regret somewhat thick borders that detonate with the rather premium appearance of the tablet. Its format, meanwhile, is both comfortable enough to carry out a whole bunch of activities and also act as a passout since it even enters a handbag or a bag of average sizes.

Finally, the Xiaomi Pad 5 remains in the light weight category with its 500g on the scale spread over 11 inches of device. Therefore, it is pleasant to use and has a pleasant grip thanks to its average format. For unlocking, the tablet does not have a fingerprint reader but has facial recognition, which is always good to take.

Screen and audio

In terms of its screen, the Xiaomi Pad 5 incorporates a WQHD+slab, which offers a 120 Hz cooling rate coupled with a definition in 2560 x 1600, which looks like the specs of a high -end tablet. This is an impression that was reinforced by the use of the tablet on a daily basis.

What really marked us is the fluidity with which she performs the actions and how comfortable it made her for gourmet activities, such as a game session on a cloud gaming service. We note however that the colors are in our opinion a little too saturated, which indirectly darkens the screen and makes the use sometimes complicated in full sun.

The whole is supported by an effective audio part which convinces us both in video and in musical listening.Due to their location on the tablet, the speakers offer a clear sound that is almost never stifled, and have good bass enough not to turn into the treble in an exaggerated manner when the volume is increased a bit.

At the back of the tablet, a single 13 MP sensor is visible, recalling the design of the sensor present on the 11 series of Xiaomi. This one is rather discreet and is just effective in taking photos of almost correct documents, as long as there is enough ambient brightness. For further use, you will obviously have to turn to a real device or your smartphone.

Performances, software and autonomy

As effective inside as it is outside, the Xiaomi Pad 5 has successful components with to start a Snapdragon 860 SoC from Qualcomm. We also find a Qualcomm Kryo 485 as well as a Qualcomm GPU Adreno 640.This gives the tablet more than suitable performance that has never been problematic for us throughout the test phase.

The Xiaomi Pad 5 also establishes a more than honorable score to the benchmarks to which we have submitted it.Certainly this clearly does not reach the scores of Apple devices with the M1 chip, but it is still at the top of the Android tablets, at a price again derisory compared to its target competitor.

To this, Xiaomi adds a battery of 8720 mAh, which is rather average but which lasts at least a whole day, depending on the use.No notable overheating on the horizon, the tablet also supports gourmet games very well, compensating for the slight temperature increase thanks to its materials.

In addition, the Xiaomi Pad 5 also benefits from the latest version of Android 11, and therefore its new button -free controls, as well as a MAI Global Home overlay in version 12.5.1.The latter is rather interesting, although it is not necessarily in the right direction.

Indeed, the general aspect of the overlay is more "iOS" than Android in some respects, and in particular in terms of icons and shortcuts, as in the bar of tasks. This is more complicated to manage than on other Android tablets since it only opens onto the right side, the left side being reserved at the notifications mark.If it is not annoying in itself, it is rather confusing and the regulars of classic Android devices will be able to experience some difficulties in finding themselves in this tablet which clearly aims for customers under iOS.

Professional suite

Finally, the WPS professional suite directly integrated is a very useful feature that allows the tablet to go from an entertainment tool to a versatile productive tool thanks to its many free options. You can for example scan your documents with the main camera, or even change the nature of your PDF documents and even save your PowerPoint oral presentation thanks to the microphone of the tablet.

Everything that is really missing from this tablet to make it a real workstation is the inclusion of a stylus and a detachable keyboard. However, Xiaomi has thought of everything since these two accessories are indeed compatible with the tablet, although they are not delivered with obvious budget reasons.

Price and availability

The Xiaomi Pad 5 is available “officially” from September 28 at a price of € 349 for the version with 128 GB of internal storage, and € 399 for the 256 GB version.
