Walmart Canada extends 5 cents in Quebec for a plastic bag

Walmart Canada extends its plastic bag reduction policy in Quebec: from May, the retailer will impose five hundred costs for each single -use plastic bag that he will provide to his customers.

Walmart's initiative in the country was initially established in British Columbia last February. In addition to Quebec, it will be extended to Ontario and the Western provinces.

In British Columbia, policy has represented a reduction of 19 million single-use bags compared to last year. This 76% reduction in bag distribution represents 152,000 kg of less plastic, the equivalent of around 120 small cars.

Walmart customers will be able to buy a reusable bag at a cost of 25 cents. In addition, the capacity of the 5 cents bag will be increased as well as its robustness, which will avoid having to use a second bag for heavier objects.

Quebecers stand out

In Quebec, the measure has been applied for several years in food stores. The Société des alcools du Québec has even gone further by not providing bags to customers since January 2009.

According to Eco Entreprises Québec, Quebecers have reduced their use of single -use shopping bags between 2007 and 2010 by 52 %.Thus, the number of plastic bags used in Quebec has increased from 2.7 billion to 1.4 billion per year in three years.

According to another study produced by the Canadian Association of the Plastic Industry, 93 %of plastic bags are reused (60 %) or recycled (33 %) in Quebec.

This evolution was made possible thanks to the price of five hundred on each bag in an increasing number of businesses and thanks to the voluntary code of good practices on the use of shopping bags, in particular adopted in 2008 by recyc-québec, eco companiesQuebec and the Association of Quebec Food Retailers.

A useful 5 cents

The sums collected for the sale of single -use bags are partly redistributed to charity organizations.

Like Walmart, IGA supermarkets, traditional markets and the majority of Bonichoix markets took the initiative to impose a cost of 5 cents per bag a few years ago.

This small sum of money is first used to pay the providers of the bags. But at IGA, if there remains a balance, it can help stores to pay their annual contribution to the Eco IGA fund, which is managed by the Organization Day of the Earth Quebec, says Laurie Fossat, spokesperson for SobeysQuebec (which operates several brands, including IGA).
