La Ciotat night market: a stand sells jewelry for waste

“We receive a bag of waste every two evenings,” says Emmanuel Laurin, proud to see that residents and tourists alike are getting into the game.

From July 2 to August 29, from 8 p.m. to midnight, the night market in La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône) is held. Among the stands, there is that of the Sauvage Méditerranée association, which offers jewelry created and made from wild waste, hence the name of the shop “Sauvage”, recalls Emmanuel Laurin. And in exchange for one of the creations, the association accepts the waste as currency.

"It's the first time we've been to the market. Until now we sold our products online but we wanted to try physical sales. It allows us to get live feedback from people.” And the feedback is pretty good so far.

If the shop wants to be eco-responsible by the materials used for the creation of the jewels, it is also participative. Residents or tourists wishing to acquire one of the products can buy them with waste.

Clarification: when the sale was made online, the association only accepted “used plastic caps found on a beach or in the creeks”.

All types of waste

For the La Ciotat market, Emmanuel Laurin accepts “all types of waste. People bring us a shopping bag and they leave with a voucher or jewelry”.

Since July 2, several have played the game. “We had two young girls, for example, who had a crush on necklaces with polished glass found in the creeks. They came back the next morning with two bags full of waste,” says an enthusiastic Emmanuel Laurin.

Yet another anecdote: “A diver came to see us and told us that he didn't collect waste when he saw it. Now he has decided to take action and has promised to come several times in August”.

They clean up the planet while having fun. Note that each piece of jewelery is consigned. Anyone can send it back and get a voucher or opt for new jewelry.
