In doubt: entrust the jewel to an expert
For gold, a jeweler will define the value of gold with on the one hand the punches which give the carats of gold and its state of purity and on the other hand by analyzing it chemically.For a diamond, it is the gemologist who will estimate him.A diamond can have the same size as another and be worth a completely different price.The purity of the stone, the number of inclusions or impurities inside, its weight, will determine its price.Ultimately, the gemologist relies on the "Diamond Report" report.A table that takes up the official course of diamond prices.But that's not all.When a piece of jewelry, whatever it is, is sold in Belgium, a third punch must be there, that of the creator, Belgian or European: the masterpiece of the master.It is a legal obligation.
Surprising expertise
We had the jewel of our viewers to a goldsmith and a gemologist.The expertise lasted a half hour.The gold of the ring was well of the 18 carats, as indicated on the certificate.Value: around 200 euros.The stone was examined in all its facets.Depending on its weight, its inclusions, the Rapporte Diamond Report is final: the stone is not worth more than 189 euros.Total: The 2800 euros jewel of our viewers is actually not more than 400 euros.This means that the jeweler pocketed 2400 euros: eight times the real value of the ring!It is rather expensive paid for the work of the goldsmith ...
Legally
The jeweler can request the price he wants, whether he is a simple distributor or manufacturer.On the other hand, it must, in both cases, be registered with the royal currency of the SPF Economy.And this is not always the case.As illustrated by the Bruges jewelry (see video report) which has indeed omitted to register a second address in the same municipality, as a distributor.An offense to the law which will force it to the fine.
Ask all questions before buying: anti-design insurance
A jewel is not only an emotional investment.It can also be a short investment.In this case, we do not buy a cat in a bag.On the other hand, watch out for convenience certificates and unstalized invoices.
They risk having no value before insurance, during a flight or loss.
